Recovery: 1 Month Post-Op (photos)

It's been exactly 1 month since my surgery date, and feeling pretty good! Here are photos from today:

I had a little challenge/set-back the past 2 weeks. I got a really bad sinus infection (Not fun at all after a rhinoplasty!). For the first week I was totally congested again, and because of that my nose puffed back up a little and got more swollen. But the past 1 week my sinus infection is clearing up a lot, and now I can breathe really well! Get to sleep with my mouth closed, it's so great. The swelling is also getting better, and looking good.

You can see there is still a very slight hump on the profile, which the doc warned me would be there for a while. But i still am amazed and really happy with how things are looking. My nose overall is feeling a lot more "normal", and finally feels like it's my nose again. The tip is still numb and feels a little strange, but the rest feels really good!

I've stopped taping the nose at night, and the last of my stitches came out last week.

One side note... i think using a neti pot is essential to recovery, as well as just normal health. It helped a ton while i was sick, and it's amazing all the junk that comes out of your nose when you are sick!

  1. wow...you look amazing!! i have the same problem with a hump that I am dying to have removed..but I am in college now, and don't know if the monthly payments would be affordable. Do they work with you and make your monthly payments low? Your rhinoplasty really looks outstanding!

  2. thanks so much! i'm really happy with the results, and only wish I had done this years ago. My doc didn't offer a payment plan, they wanted the full amount up front 2 weeks before the surgery date, which was tough... but worth it in the end. I think some docs do offer a payment plan though.

Best of luck if you go through with yours, and thanks for the nice comments!

  3. hello!
I just wanted to say a huge congratulations to you and your beautiful new nose - you really do look amazing!
I also wanted to tell you THANK YOU for being so brave and open in posting your recovery journey - I am about to have a rhinoplasty myself, and it's so hard to find good day-by-day recovery pictures. Of course the surgeons show you before pictures then 6 months post-op, but the reality of the procedure is in the next days and weeks following the actual surgery since these are the hardest days, physically and emotionally.

again, thank you so much for providing such a wonderful and open look at the recovery process - your blog made me feel so much more comfortable and prepared for the procedure, now that I know what to expect!

  4. I'm so happy to hear this blog is helpful to you!! I decided to put it out there because, like you, i couldn't find any good "day by day" blogs that gave me a good idea what to expect. I was hoping this would help someone else, and i'm SO glad it has!

Best of luck with your surgery, you won't be sorry. You just need to tough it out through the first couple weeks of recovery, then the rest is smooth sailing!!

  6. Hi,
Your results are truly very beautiful, you must be so happy.
I am planning on flying to the states early next year to have rhinoplasty operation,i live in Britain but want to have my rhino op done in america as it seems to be more advanced in the states than it is here.At the moment i am currently researching surgeons and came across Dr Naficy on the makemeheal forum.
i have heard really positive things about him and so far nothing negative ,i am also really interested in consulting with him after looking at his befoore and afters which are incredible.
I am quite scared about having the op as i have heard so many stories of botched nose jobs which has seriously freaked me out.i want a bumo taken out of my nose and for my tip to be refined.I am doing as much research as possible as i would be truly devastated if i ended up with a result i didn't like.
I have a really good feeling about Dr Naficy but just want as much info as possible as to be on the safe side.So far i have had phone consults with two surgeons in La, although they came across caring and informative i was not to keen on their before and afters.
If possible can you give me any info you have on Dr Naficy i would truly appreciate any advice you can give me.

    kind regards

  7. Thank you all for the nice comments! It has now been 9 months and i'm very happy with the results. I'll post an updated photo soon so you can see.

    Mandy -
I highly recommend Dr. Naficy. I did a TON of research on surgeons in the west coast, and he truly seems to be one of the top surgeon for rhinoplasty. I will say though, because of this, the cost is about double compared to other surgeons in my area (Seattle), BUT it is 100% worth it.

The whole experience was amazing, very comfortable and i felt like i was in very trusty hands. Dr. Naficy is very kind, professional, and great and putting you at ease, and making you feel comfortable and confident in your decision. Like you said, the main reason I chose him was his before & afters looked amazing, and he has done tons of hump removals. They have many more examples in their office. Also he specializes mainly in rhinoplasty, so he has really perfected the craft, whereas other surgeons do many different types of plastic surgery. His staff was excellent as well. I was really excited about my surgery but also extremely nervous. But honestly it was like I closed my eyes, and the next minute I woke up and it was done! I felt pretty good when i woke up and the recovery really wasn't bad at all. Dr. Naficy's office was really good about checking up on me, even sent a huge box of candy to my house! Also they were great about answering my questions early on in the recovery, I called several times to check on things the first couple weeks and they were very kind and helpful, responding immediately.

I also read so many horror stories about rhinoplasty gone wrong, so in the end, i figured this is a really big deal that will last the rest of my life, so I wanted to go to the very best regardless of cost - which is clear that is Dr. Naficy. The service and results are really wonderful, he runs a very professional and high end practice that makes it worth every penny!!

Hope that helps you. I'd be more than happy to answer any other questions, just ask! And best of luck with your surgery, call Dr. Naficy and make an appt for consult, it helps a lot to meet him and his staff in person.

    Good luck!

  8. Hi
Thanks so much for the info,i really appreciate it:)
If possible could you help me with something i would be so grateful,i was looking at Dr Naficy's hospital affiliations and was just wondering if you know how i can research into them as i have been told that its really important for a surgeon to have hospital connections ,i put Dr naficy name into the hospital websites that hes affiliated with but his name is not coming up on any of them?
I am really keen on going to him and my instincts are telling me that he is the surgeon to go to, i am planning on having a phone consult with him fingers crossed he does them, but just want to be 100 per cent sure that i have looked into him properly.
    Thx so much.

    Kindest regards

  9. Hi Mandy - I actually don't know much about his hospital affiliations, but I'm sure that side of things is very solid. If you call them they can probably answer questions about that, or also during your consult. You are right to do as much research as possible so you don't regret your decision at all! All I know is that I'm very happy with my experience and quality of the surgery from Dr. Naficy. Best of luck, and I'd love to hear how things go for you!!

  13. YOU DO LOOK GREAT. I AM ONLY 3 DAYS OUT SO FEEL OK NOT PAINFUL BUT HEADACHY. THERE SEEMS TO BE A LOT OF DRIED BLOOD THAT IS DRIVING E KOOKY. ANY GOOD IDEAS? I AM FINDING IT HARD TO SIT STILL AND NOT TRY AND GET RID OF THIS SOMEHOW. I KNOW ITS EARLY BUT NOSE ISN'T BLEEDING. THANKS -S-

  14. Hi S, contests on your surgery! So the first couple weeks really are the hardest. I remember having to distract myself a lot. Did your doc prescribe any pain medicine? If so use it, it really helps with the headaches. I recall having a really annoying constant dull headache the first couple weeks, but that does go away soon! I also took a lot of naps, just to "check out" sand pass time. That and my mom stayed with us for a week which really helped distract me. I watched a lot of tv, and slept a lot the first week. Just do your best to stick it out this week, and week 2 you'll start to feel better. I do remember dried blood, just one of those thing right after surgery, but that doesn't last long. Just follow your doctors instructions for post surgery care and you will be fine. Also, do not hesitate to call your doc for anything. I called my doctors office a LOT, and they were really helpful, even if all they did was tell me that everything I'm worried about is normal. Just helps to hear it from your doctor. It will all be worth it, just remember that! a month from now you'll really see the improvement. Best of luck with your recovery, it does get better very soon!

  16. Marie,
You look fabulous!! I had the rhinoplasty i was dying to have for 10 years exactly a month ago today. I found your blog the day before my surgery and it was a god send!! It really got me through my first couple of weeks! I have it bookmarked and I'm still checking it to compare my progress to yours. I'm still super stuffy at night and I'm not sure if its a cold or what, but it is definitely swelling. So frustrating. Anyway, I am so glad I did it, I too, love my new nose. I just have to say thank you for posting this. I love your sense or humor!! My only regret is I read a little joke you made about having your husband look up there with a flashlight...and it gave me an idea... and I was suddenly looking in my nose with my book light all day and night relentless about the stitches and everything else up there!! My Fiance had to hide the light! Thought that would give you a laugh, thanks again!!

  17. Hi Erika - A big congrats on your surgery!! you must be feeling pretty good since you are a month out. The worst is over. :) I'm so glad to hear my blog has been helpful to you, it's why I put it out there. I figured better to know the honest truth of recovery and be prepared. Now that i'm almost 2 years out, looking back, the swelling did take the full year to 100% go down, and there were ups & downs, especially since I got sick, that made it way worse. I think the bad congestion lasted a couple months for me, so give it time. It DOES go away, but i know right now it seems like there's no hope. Trust me, if you can get through the first 3 months, from there it's smooth sailing.

That is too funny about the light! I was so obsessed with the stitches and all the crazy stuff that goes on with healing. LOL. I was totally addicted to the neti pot, it actually did do wonders. Good thing you have a fiance to keep you sane and hide that light, LOL! Best of luck with the rest of your recovery, it really does get dramatically better week by week. Congrats and enjoy your new nose!

  18. That gives me a lot of relief... I will try to be patient with the stuffiness!! Thank you!!! Thanks again for posting this I can't imagine what I would've done without it. How long would you say it is important to avoid any bump or blow to the nose? I have been so afraid to drive! Never have had the air bags deploy but I figure with my luck this would be the time it would happen!!! I know you had a little incident with your daughter bumping your nose, did you decide to redo your surgery?? If it is any consolation at all, I think it looks absolutely perfect and I wouldn't do it if I was you, really!! You look great. I finally got over my obsession with the light, the q-tips digging for things, and the Vaseline... Thank god... But I think they're are still a few stitches left. It's really a crazy thing. It something that was a shadow in my mind forever and whenever that shadow creeps up i have to remind myself, oh yeah I actually got the surgery it's done! Do you feel that way too? It's a great sensation!!

  19. Wow! It seems that your rhinoplasty is a success. Having a rhinoplasty seems good, since it can enhance your looks. Recovering from it seems like it will be very hard, but once you've passed that phase, it is worth it.

  21. Hi, your nose does look great! Thanks for this blog, it is very helpful to see how the process is from day one. I have my rhinoplasty scheduled for Nov 10th 2011. I am having an open rhinoplasty, but they are not breaking my nose. Just shortening it some, it is too long and pointy. I'm concerned about the amount of time it will be swollen for. The doctor said the majority is gone in 4-6 weeks but residual for up to a year? What percentage was your nose swollen at 4, 6 and 8 weeks? Did it really take a year? What percent is residual swelling? 5%? Thanks for any comments!

  22. Hi Brian - Thanks for the note, and congrats on your decision!

To answer your question, most of the noticeable swelling took 2 months to go away, where it looked like "my" nose again. The bruising and stuff went away after about 1-1/2 weeks, so i did not leave my house for the first week. But after about a week you look presentable and normal again.

One thing, for me I noticed swelling going down as long as 2 years post op. I'm talking very very minor amounts, but not looking back to a year ago, it's looking even better now than before. I am NOT a patient person, so the hardest part was probably the whole first 1 year of recovery, just watching every day to see the swelling go down more and more.

But honestly the majority of the swelling goes away pretty fast. If I remember, for me about 50% was gone after a couple weeks, probably 70% was gone after 1 month, then after that slowly each month i'd notice a small difference over the course of a year. Looking back now, i'd say after 1 year, 95% of the swelling was gone, and in year 2 the last 5% went away. Now i'm loving it! But does require patience and trust that your doc did an excellent job.

Hope that helps, and good luck with the procedure. You won't be sorry you did it! Just be sure to take a week off work if you can and hide out at home. :)
