Recovery: 7 Days Post-Op

Feeling great now with the cast off, and stitches between the nostrils gone. Still congested but I can at least breathe and it's slowly improving. But since I can't smell anything, that means I also can't really taste anything. So it's kinda weird, but i'm still eating, just can't really enjoy food like usual. Sleeping way better now, only woke up twice last night from dry mouth. Energy level is good, about 90%. I can tell if i do too much i need to rest though, I cleaned the house and that wiped me out! Or maybe i'm just a wimp and out of shape. Either way, i'm going to rest a lot all week long.

Still very happy with the results, my chipmunk cheeks are nearly gone, and bruising is all yellow now. I think it'll be completely gone in a few days.

  1. Thank you for this blog.I just found it! I am 7 days post op as well.I am not as thrilled with my results because the swelling on the tip seems enormous! My doc said nothing about taping. Can you tell me more about that?

  2. Hi Michelle - Congrats on your surgery! I'm glad you find my blog helpful. One thing I will say, it seriously takes a loooong time for all the swelling to go down. The majority goes down in a few months, but for me it took well over 1 year for all the swelling to disappear, and most of the last bit was in the tip of my nose. In fact the other day my mom said she thinks it went down even more lately (and it's been almost 2 years). I know that doesn't help much now, but just know what you see in the first few months it's still really puffy and not like the final result, and the tip is the last part to go down. I remember the first few months going so slow!

Regarding the taping, I have to say first to ask you doc before doing anything. :) But to answer your question, it was pretty simple and i think it did help, even if it was just "something to do" that made me feel like it was reducing the swelling. My doc gave me 1/2" surgical tape, and basically I taped it firmly across the nose all the way from the bridge to the tip, then at the tip I did a strip underneath to support the cartilage he added to the tip of my nose. It's hard to explain without a visual, but you are basically creating a splint with tape. Apparently the pressure of the tape helps keep the swelling down a bit. You should call your doc and ask about it, he should be familiar with it and can tell you if it's right for you. Also here's a video that might help: http://www.5min.com/Video/How-to-Tape-a-Nose-After--Rhinoplasty-38907835

I hope your recovery goes well, and be careful of not bumping the nose like I did!!

  3. Hi Marie-
I am just seeing your blog for the first time and curious about what the procedure you had actually entailed....sounds like you have a little more done than just the bump taken down. I am going in for a simple (or so the docs say) and slight bump removal where the only incision is inside my nose, they will file down the small hump and not change the tip or break any bones.
I am worried about recovery time so hoping I can get some idea of what I am really in for.
Any thoughts? If you would not mind sharing what the procedure actually entailed I think that might help me to gauge the time it will take mine to heal.
    thanks.

  4. Hi S -
My procedure was an open rhinoplasty. They actually did break the nose, and also filed down the hump. He also took some of the cartilage from my nose and added it to the tip to give it a teeny bit of lift. I have no idea how different recovery times are, but I hope that this helps you! Best of luck with recovery!
